You can extract the tar ball by "tar -zxf" with "--strip-components=1" option. Kernel 2.6.27 is a LTS kernel, and a lot of security/bug fixes were made since 2.6.27.10 (it is 2.6.27.24 now). If you can accept hardened-gentoo's kernel source (which includes pax patch), you can use ccs-patch-2.6.27-hardened-gentoo.diff or ccs-patch-2.6.28-hardened-gentoo.diff . http://packages.gentoo.org/package/sys-kernel/hardened-sources Regards.
